New Year’s Party Ideas for Kids

Updated: Aug 1, 2023

If you don’t have New Year’s plans this year, might we suggest ringing in the new year right at home with your kids?

While it can be hard for little kids to understand what New Year’s Eve is all about, with a small amount of planning, you all can have a blast.

We’ve gathered some helpful New Year’s party tips and ideas so your kids can feel like they are part of the fun–so, let’s jump in!

Planning a New Year’s Eve Party for Kids

So you want to ring in the new year with your little one, but you don't want them to be up past their bedtime, crying because they're tired and overstimulated. We hear you! Here are some great ways to celebrate the holiday without wearing your or your child out:

Start the party early.

Because getting kids to bed on time is good for everyone, consider starting your party right after supper, if not before.

Set the clocks ahead.

If your child can read, feel free to set the clocks ahead just for the night so they feel like they got to stay up late.

Just add glow sticks.

Glow sticks make any party a blast!

Make a toast.

The kids will feel extra special with a delicious fizzy drink just like the adults. Consider a sparkling juice with a piece of cotton candy on the top!

Something sweet.

No party is complete without a sweet treat! Check out these New Year’s Eve Oreo Balls from The First Year Blog and chocolate chip cookie shooters from Crystal and Comp that we think look delicious!

Have a family game night.

Get the family playing together with a fun game night, such as card games, board games, puzzles, trivia, scavenger hunts, and more.

Have hourly activities.

We especially love this idea of New Year’s Eve countdown bags from Coffee and Confetti Mom. Each hour leading up to the ball drop (or bedtime!), your kids get to open up a back and discover the next activity. Check out her blog post for full details and ideas of what activities you can do together.

Planning New Year’s Day Festivities for Kids

Once the confetti settles and everyone gets a good night’s sleep, your New Year celebrations can continue! Here are a few fun, hands-on activities for the next day:
